Garmin Forerunner 50 Sports Watch with Foot Pod
Get ready for a small surprise... The Garmin Forerunner 50 doesn’t have a GPS! Instead, the device works with a “foot pod” which will track your movements by sensing the impact of your footsteps while walking or running. The watch also comes in a form factor which looks much more like a traditional watch and not like a GPS device.
The Forerunner 50 is sold in a few different combinations, some with the foot pod, some with a heart rate monitor, and all will come with a wireless USB stick so that information can be downloaded wirelessly from the watch to the USB stick and then into your computer. These watches also work with Garmin Connect - Garmin’s online training site, so that owners can log their workouts and share that information with friends, family, or coaches.
Garmin’s new downloadable set-up is fantastic value and simple to use. You can input your own training zone and set the watch to beep if your effort drifts, while the interval timer allows you to plan differing periods of work and rest. The memory will store info from up to 100 laps and around seven hours of exercise so you can check back and record the duration of your session, time spent in your training zone, average HR and so on.
Even better, you can wirelessly download all of this data to Garmin’s free Training Center software on your PC (Windows 2000 or Windows XP) or to the online Garmin Connect site where you can analyse it at your leisure. A speed/cadence sensor gives you a wide range of bike functions, or if you’re a runner too you can get a version with a Foot Pod (a lightweight and accurate speed sensor).
The Forerunner 50 is in fact Garmin’s first attempt at a low cost heart rate monitor. The Forerunner 50 is a no frills, basic heart rate monitor suited to a range of sports, specifically running and cycling. The Forerunner 50 provides users with constant heart rate tracking and speed and cadence monitoring with the optional footpod (running) or speed/cadence sensor (cycling). The device automatically syncs your history with your computer using ANT+ wireless technology whenever the two are in range of each other. The Forerunner 50’s compact size and lightweight design make it an alternative to the larger GPS-enabled watches for those with smaller wrists and for those on a tighter budget.
The Forerunner 50 is a very stylish watch. It's compact and weighs only 42g, an important factor for those of you with smaller wrists. The buttons feel natural and the main data field is bold and easy to read while exercising.
The heart rate monitor strap is comfortable to wear and easy to use. Both the heart rate monitor and footpod come automatically paired with the Forerunner 50 so there are no lengthy setup procedures. However to get maximum accuracy out of your footpod you will want to calibrate it manually which shouldn’t take too long. Once you manually calibrat the footpod, you'll find its distance calculations very accurate. The menu structure is intuitive and easy to operate which is a good thing considering the rather unclear manual.
Product Features:
Digital wireless heart rate monitor strap
Set alarms for target heart rate zones to ensure you’re always getting a good workout

For the relatively low cost of this device, the Forerunner 50 is a very good unit. If you’re not looking for all the frills of higher end heart rate monitors then you won’t be missing out on anything by buying the Forerunner 50.
