Garmin Forerunner 101
Garmin’s Forerunner 301, 201 and 101 are compact GPS personal training devices sharing pretty identical features. Those who are serious about their training will definitely appreciate the larger display screens which make it easier to pick up displayed statistics while running or cycling. Although they are large, the units are still reasonably light. While particularly useful for runners the Forerunner units are also applicable cycling, hiking, and other training activities where monitoring/logging your distance, speed and heart are important.

The Forerunner 101 offers athletes, recreational walkers and runners an entry-level personal training device with GPS. It has the same features as the Forerunner 201, but operates on two AAA batteries. The Forerunner 101 stores lap histories for up to two years to provide an archive of workout performance over time. Users can retrieve lap data for previous workouts by date, week, month, or over a specific time interval. For business travelers who want to train on the road, the Forerunner 101 also doubles as a navigator. Users can mark their hotel as a specific location, see their current position on the plotter display, and follow an electronic breadcrumb trail back to their starting point.

For runners who feel there's no such thing as too much information or too many features, the Garmin Forerunner 101 may be just the GPS device for them. Using the company's GPS technology that has already been proven on many other units and is becoming more common in motorized navigation, the Forerunner will tell you how far and how fast you've run, and where as well.

Nevertheless, you shouldn't overlook the Garmin Forerunner 101 even if you're on a budget. It's a great value, even if it is somewhat big and bulky. The Garmin Forerunner 101 uses a long, wide display. The watch's width is 3.26 inches, compared with only 1.88 inches of the Garmin Forerunner 405. Still, this watch tracks much of the same data, including pace, distance, time and calories, and it also includes the popular virtual partner training tool. This is a very accurate GPS although the satellite signal has a tendency to flake out near tall buildings or under dense tree cover. Unlike other Forerunner GPS watches, the Garmin Forerunner 101 uses two AAA batteries instead of a rechargeable battery, although some owners prefer that setup. In addition, you can't upload your workout data to a computer with the Garmin Forerunner 101, but it does store up to two years of data in the internal memory. If you want the ability to track your progress using Garmin's online software (which is now available for both PCs and Macs), the Garmin Forerunner 405 or Garmin Forerunner 305 are great alternatives.

Both the Forerunner 301 and 201 are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with a healthy 15 hour charge life. The Forerunner 101 takes two AAA batteries. As they are likely to be worn in wet weather and subjected to considerable perspiration the units are waterproof. However, they have limited depth capability and are not suitable for wearing while swimming.

Usually the accuracy of any GPS unit is reliant on its ability to get signals from satellites. Trees, buildings and wires can affect the signal's strength. A test run with the Forerunner 101 along a tree-lined 6.8 mile race course came up more than a tenth of a mile short. Still, the other features of the Forerunner are enough to forgive this potential deficiency.

Besides running time, distance and pace, the Forerunner uses the navigational capabilities of GPS to record an "electronic breadcrumb" map of the route youve run . You can earmark intermediate points on the trail, and theres a neat Back to Start feature that provides cues and directions to retrace your steps extremely useful if you're lost running in an unfamiliar city, or forest. When you recall the run from the unit's memory, you get a digital display of your route in addition to the usual time, distance and pace data.

You can also program pace and distance alarms and set up interval workouts based on time or distance. There's a Virtual Partner mode that displays a graphic of a digital runner who is either ahead of or behind you based on a preselected pace. Auto Lap (either time or distance based) and Auto Pause (the watch stops when you do) are also useful. The memory stores 5,000 laps, spread out over any combination of workouts, retrievable by date, week, month, or for a specific time period.

The Forerunner is about the size of the wrist TV-radios from the old Dick Tracy comics, but it doesn't feel bulky or uncomfortable. Six buttons control the functions, and the complex menu of options takes a few tries to figure out, although its eminently logical once you do.

Working out with the Forerunner 101 means you're never alone in your personal training, because the unit provides a ''Virtual Partner''. This unique feature allows you to set your training goal by configuring your Virtual Partner's pace and workout distance. You'll get a graphic perspective of your performance by viewing your pace in relation to your Virtual Partner's pace, so you can always see at a glance if you're keeping up or falling behind.

If youre a minimalist runner who only needs the total run time, this unit is probably too informational for you. But if you need effective running gadgets and the feedback they provide, and you live in an area where GPS signals are strong, the Forerunner 101 is a great option.
