Garmin nuvi 255W
The Garmin Nuvi 255W is quickly taking its position as a solid entry level unit in the Garmin lineup, offering a series of new tweaks that you'll appreciate and enjoy. The Garmin Nuvi 255W takes the thin design from Garmin's widescreen platform and offers a sleek and solid unit that is easy to hold in a pocket. The slider switch on the top of the device allows you to turn the unit on with a quick flick of the finger, while also locking the unit so that it doesn't get turned on by mistake while packing it away. The power cord is a 12V power cord that comes with the unit and plugs into the back of the unit. The mount is a single cam lever mount that offers a good way of mounting to the windshield or the disc that's included to adhere it to the dash. The Nuvi 255W snaps into a couple of clips on the mount and stays snug once attached.
The Garmin 255W is an affordable, widescreen navigator. It leads the way with voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions that speak street names. The MSN Direct optional feature will get you to your destination on time and keep you informed. It's packed with millions of destinations and maps for North America or Europe. Like the rest of the sleek nuvi 2x5-series, this portable navigator is priced right and ultra-easy to use. With the widescreen display, you'll always get the big picture. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. Its sunlight-readable, 4.3-inch display is easy to read — from any direction.
The nuvi 255W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. It even announces the name of exits and streets so you never have to take your eyes off the road. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with turn-by-turn voice directions, 2-D or 3-D maps and smooth map redraw rates as you navigate. Its digital elevation maps show you shaded contours at higher zoom levels, giving you a big picture of the surrounding terrain. In addition, nuvi 255W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. With HotFix™ satellite prediction, nüvi calculates your position faster to get you there quicker.
Like the rest of the 2x5-series, the 255W sports a sleek, slim design and fits comfortably in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or foot. With its "Where Am I?" emergency locator, you always know your location. Simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations.
Nuvi 255W also includes many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. With photo navigation, you can download Google Panoramio pictures via the Garmin Connect Photos website and navigate to them. The device is compatible with optional enhanced MSN Direct content (subscription and receiver required) and the free Garmin Garage where you can download animated vehicles that show your location on the map. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in microSD cards such as Garmin Travel Guides for detailed data on attractions.
The Nuvi 255W has several upgraded features:
- New faster processor, making for a faster routing and map drawing
- New shaded elevation maps
- Now compatible with optional TMC traffic receivers, or MSN Direct service (Gas prices, traffic, local events, stocks, news, and weather
- Garmin HotFix capability to automatically calculate and store satellite locations so that you will be able to turn the unit on and go a lot faster greatly reducing satellite acquisition time
- Geolocated Picture capability - Download geotagged photos to the Garmin to be able to navigate to a loaded picture; works with Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and Garmin Connect Photos website
The Nuvi 255W may be an entry level widescreen unit, but hardly feel like it. It's a high quality device, with all of the makings that got Garmin to be a market leader. The routing is solid, the interface is better than ever and the prices are very reasonable. When considering a new GPS, a leading brand is worth the extra money, not to mention the Text to Speech, and the Widescreen. You're probably going to use this GPS hundreds of times, across thousands of miles, and many thousands of turns; the added confidence of its reliability it's worth it.
