Garmin nuvi 200
Another highly recommended GPS unit from Garmin is the 200, which makes a very good impression. It's slim and light and the screen bezel is kept to a minimum, which means more room for maps while keeping the profile of the 4.3in widescreen in your windscreen to a minimum. Nuvi 200W will shows you your way with detailed maps on a bright widescreen display and clear, voice-prompted directions. This stylish navigator and travel companion comes with preloaded maps for the lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico or regional coverage in other areas. Like the rest of the nüvi 200-series, nuvi 200W is affordably priced and user friendly.
The wide screen you'll always get the big picture. View map detail, driving directions, photos and more in bright, brilliant color. Its sunlight-readable, 4.3-inch display is easy to read from any direction. Once you switch it on you get the opening screen. On the opening screen you're presented with just two main options: Where To? and View Map. It's pretty obvious what you do to plan a route - just hit the Address option next, then search for your destination.
Nuvi 200W comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2-D or 3-D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. In addition, nüvi 200W accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.
It seems that other important features are always just a click away and there's little confusion as to where everything is to be found. One of the nüvi’s best features is its detour, or road block function. Just press Menu then Detour and you're instantly diverted a few kilometres around the current section in the route. Like the rest of the nuvi 200 series, 200 sports a sleek, slim design and fits comfortably in your pocket or purse. Its rechargeable lithium-ion battery makes it convenient for navigation by car or foot.
But navigation is not all. Nuvi 200 includes many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and is compatible with the free Garmin Garage where you can download custom vehicles that show your location on the map. Enhance your travel experience with optional plug-in SD cards such as Garmin Travel Guides for detailed data on attractions.
The maps are extremely clear and easy to read; better than TomTom's or Mio's in our opinion. Initially they look a bit cartoon-like with their bright colours and thick lines, and the distorted perspective that Garmin uses to squeeze as much as possible onto the screen at once makes things look rather odd. But once you get used to it, it does the job brilliantly. The distorted perspective, which seems to stretch and tilt the part of the road you're driving on and compress the roads in the distance means that it's child's play to see the approaching road layout and what's coming up. It's helped by the fact that most of the screen is used to display the map with only a small strip at the top for displaying the current road and next road, and just two compact indicator windows at the bottom: one for indicating estimated arrival time and the other showing the distance to the next turn.
The Nuvi 200W is an excellent device we strongly recommend. It's accurate, the maps are very clear, routing is competent, and audio instructions are reliable. It's extremely easy to use and most of the significant functions are very obvious and simple to access – it's almost worth having for that detour function alone. And though there is no facility to add traffic updates, it scores well with its affordable price tag.
