Mio Moov 310
Mio has decided to get rid of all the non-navigation features like MP3 player, video playback or photo browsing and focus on the navigation features. It makes sense, because the majority of users do not use their GPS for entertainment. The Mio Moov 310 has a sleek and neutral look that fits most car interiors. The mount is small and discreet, but does not stick on all dashboard materials - if you buy a Move 310 make sure that the texture of your dashboard is compatible with the mount adhesive.
The GPS starts right away on the map view with no intermediate screen for using other features like the MP3 Player or get to the settings options. This user interface is easier to use than the previous Mio devices. It seems everything is more accessible directly from the map, and browsing the features is more intuitive. Entering an address is easy - the GPS will guess the city or street name upon the entry of a few letters. The menu icon is not obvious to recognize as a menu button , but the map colors look better.
The Mio Moov interface is less complicated and more intuitive than that found on Mio DigiWalker models, though not all of the previous features have been included in the Moov interface.
The map screen has several components that are common to most auto GPS receivers. For example, the center top bar shows the next turn while the next maneuver indicator at upper left can be tapped to call out the direction and distance to the next turn. The bottom left button brings up the main menu, as does the center bottom bar which usually displays your current location. Centered on the right side of the screen are three buttons. The “X” cancels the current route, the magnifying glass allows you to zoom the map in or out, while the map button lets you scroll through the various map screens (3D, 2D, traffic overview, route, turn-by-turn).
Notice the arrows on the top right and bottom right buttons, indicating that they can be expanded. The top right button can be changed to show the current time, current speed, time to go, distance to go or estimated time of arrival. Likewise, the lower right button can display a compass indicator, GPS status, battery status, TMC status and mute/un-mute volume. For most of these you can tap and hold for additional information.
The Mio Moov 310 has a couple of advanced navigation features not typically found on units in this price range and which can be useful. Multi-destination routing - allows you to plan a multi-destination route, change the order of stops, and add or delete stops. Unfortunately, you cannot add a stop once you are navigating a multi-destination route, though you can skip waypoints mid-route. Also note that there is no route optimization tool for designing the most efficient route for selected waypoints. Also, there is a custom area avoidance, a feature that seems to work fairly well, though dragging the map to define an area can be slightly awkward and imprecise.
The PC software of Mio allows you to backup and restore your unit and to re-download maps that you have paid for. It looks fine, but it's confusing. The software allows you to buy traffic subscriptions but when you connect the 310, it will ask you to enter the Mio website to get an activation code for the free one year of traffic. When you get to Mio's site there is no way to get a code for the 310, just for earlier units. Though worth of notice - the unit received traffic even without this code.
The Photo Album feature can import NavPix, but it's not clearly explained. The Image Search feature is associated with Flickr. A different tab allows you to add different voices and languages. But above all, for the first time Mio developed the software in-house, thanks to the recent Navman acquisition. The new map animation is not as fast but it is fairly ok. However, the zoom is definitely slower and not fluid at all in comparison to the C310.
The Mio Moov is a very useful and focused GPS. If you don't need entertainment features, this one is for you!
