Garmin nuvi 1260T
Most GPS devices today are built to be used in vehicles and include one mode for pedestrians. The pedestrians use is usually just an automobile mode that avoids highways and ignores one-way streets. But Garmin's new nüvi 1260T changes this concept. When combined with the optional cityXplorer maps, its enhances the pedestrian mode by providings routes that also take advantage of buses and subways. If you live in or are visiting a large city with a complex public transportation system, this could be a godsend. If not, you're probably better off with the less-expensive but similar nüvi 265T.
The Nuvi 1260T has a 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel screen and subscription-free lifetime traffic. It's preloaded with maps for North America. It also includes text-to-speech conversion as well as ecoRoute, a feature that helps you find the most fuel-efficient ways to get around. One of the major differences, however, is the form factor. Measuring 2.9 by 3.7 by 0.6 inches (HWD), the 1260T is the thinnest GPS on the market! Obviously if you're walking and carrying the device, that's a huge advantage.
The nuvi 1260T is equipped with Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free calling via a compatible phone. With a built-in microphone and speaker you will be able to talk hands-free through the 1260T without taking your eyes off the road.
If you need to commute to the office every day and keep wondering whether you will be able to reach on time or will encounter a traffic jam then you can get rid of all your worries through the NAVTEQ Traffic receiver which will give you your local traffic status and even will act as a power charger. You can get specific information like traffic flow speeds, nationwide coverage for US, accidents and other unplanned problems on your route and construction work sites as well.
In automobile mode, the nüvi 1260T functions almost exactly like the 265T. It calculates routes the same way every other nüvi does. But there are some subtle differences in operation. When driving with an active route, tapping the information icon at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen brings up choices of data to display, including estimated travel time to destination, estimated time of arrival, direction of travel, elevation, or time of day. Similarly, without an active route, you can choose direction of travel, elevation, or time of day.
The enhanced pedestrian mode is quite different from the traditional automobile navigation mode. First, you don't have a choice of views. The only view available is 2D north up, which keeps the map in the same orientation as you walk. The pedestrian mode also does not provide voice-prompted directions, a choice Garmin says it made to avoid drawing attention to its carrier on the street.
It's worth noting however that in pedestrian mode, the map doesn't move to keep your current location centered on the screen. You can reposition the map by dragging it, relocate yourself by zooming out, or tap the icon in the upper right-hand corner to advance to the next step. The reason is to prevent the user from losing access to the route while on public transportation (such as a subway), where the signal could drop out. People who are used to a moving map may find this a little difficult to adjust to.
For some models of nüvi, the optional maps provide map and POI updates. Only on the 1200 and 1300 series you get public transit routings with the optional maps.
The Garmin nüvi is affordably priced, giving you a sleeker and lighter form factor, a refreshed user interface, and the enhanced pedestrian mode. The public transit routes generated by this unit are a great feature, specially if you're planning to visit where you knew nothing about the public-transportation system.
