Magellan RoadMate 1440
Magellan has redesigned their RoadMate portable navigation devices to feature a high quality display and an ultra-thin case. The RoadMate 1440 is a powerful navigation system with sophisticated features and an affordable price. The 1440 has a WQVGA 4.3” touch screen that is viewable in direct sunlight and allows for easy operation. Built inside of the .7” thick case is a high powered WAAS GPS receiver, a lithium-ion battery that will keep the unit powered for up to 3 hours on a single charge. Weighing in at just 6.03 ounces and sporting dimensions of 3.3”H x 4.6”W x .7”D, the RoadMate 1440 can easily go from one vehicle to another.
The Magellan OneTouch feature puts all of your favorites one screen touch away. Fill up your OneTouch page with your home address, friend’s addresses, or your favorite points of interest to visit and find the closest one to your current location. Avoid paying foreign ATM fees and put your specific bank as a OneTouch item. Do you like coffee from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts; add them to refuel at the nearest location. In addition to your OneTouch favorites the Magellan 1440 has millions of Points of interest for you to set as your destination as well as addresses for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
When your destination has been set, the RoadMate 1440 will give you verbal turn by turn directions to that destination while speaking the street names you are turning onto. Highway lane assist allows the Magellan 1440 to give you an advanced warning to make sure you are in the proper lane for your next maneuver. If you miss a turn the 1440 will recalculate the route and get you right back on track. Have a few stops along the way, the RoadMate can handle that as well, sorting them in the order you put them in or optimizing the stops for the most efficient way through them.
Both new users and users that have tried the Maestro in the past will be impressed with the interface improvements. There is a favorites menu called “OneTouch” that can give you access to all the main features in a single touch. You can also add any bookmarks leading to your favorite places no matter where you are located.
The navigation is smooth and acurate. You shouldn't have a problem to drive around and find your destination, mainly because of its customizable route methods. You can set different routes based on the fastest time, shortest distance, and most or least use of freeways and easily compare the results. Multi-destination routing is also supported allowing you to set multiple stops in any given order and then let the RoadMate do the rest.
One of the highly praised features of the entire lineup is the QuickSpell feature which basically makes it easier to type in street names by highlighting the letters that can be used to complete a known name. This is great for searching for other streets or names to plan your trip. If you are on the highway often, you can take advantage of the highway lane assist signs feature that guides you to the correct exit without missing a turn.
On the maps side, millions of POIs are included in their preloaded maps including locations of restaurants, gas stations, coffee shops, ATMs, banks, and other places to check out. Some of the POIs are take the form of their own logos making them easier to spot while driving. Maps can be browsed in 2-D and 3-D with a nifty contrast option for night viewing.
Safety is key. You can keep your eyes on the road as you drive because spoken street name guidance announces the street name along with audible turning cues. Highway lane assist offers visual aids to point you in the right direction and ensure that you'll choose the correct lane well before your next turn. Should your vehicle unfortunately break down as you travel, the AAA locate screen provides your location so help will know where to find you.
