TomTom GO 930T
The TomTom GO 930t (Traffic) is the flagship of TomTom's premier SatNav range. Not only does it have the latest TomTom hardware technology, it also has new innovative features such as IQ Routes and Map Share. Combine this with an RDS-TMC Traffic receiver, and a full featured MP3 player and you get a portable in-car assistant that will get you from A to B anywhere in Europe or Northern America.
The new IQRoutes functionality and Advanced Lane Guidance are designed to increase the efficiency and clarity of navigation. Obviously you'll find all the usual features and extras that have made the satnav giant such a leader. The 930T is nicely designed, with a sleek black finish and pocket-sized build. There are few controls on the exterior save for a power button, but the interface is so well designed that this isn't really a problem. On-screen buttons are large and easily accessible, and the massive range of features has been effectively condensed into an intuitive menu structure.
Tapping the map view opens the main menu, from which you can plan a route in a number of ways, pair a mobile phone via Bluetooth, manage favourites, itineraries and maps and access music and media. The ‘Help Me' feature offers guides, advice and instant directions and contact details for emergency services, and a range of preferences offers full control over customising the interface and information provided en-route. You can access weather forecasts, download additional voices, map corrections and POIs and chat to other users in the local area.
There's also a range of powerful tools built in, such as an FM transmitter for sending voice directions, media playback to a car stereo, remote iPod control and voice recognition so you can plan a route by speaking the address out loud. You'll also find full TMC information from the box, speed camera updates and a full car kit and USB mount/charger for connecting the device to your PC for updates and downloads.
Planning and navigating a route is predictably straightforward, with clear directions, including text-to-voice for road names and locations. Instructions are well timed and provided. The maps look a bit basic, but offer excellent clarity. The nice mix of the directional arrows on the road plus the navigational icons make it difficult to take a wrong turn.
The TomTom GO 930T comes with everything you need to get going from power cables to windscreen (or windshield) mount.
* The TomTom GO 930T itself
* An RDS-TMC cable for traffic

The IQRoutes is the headline addition to the 930t. It works by calculating a route based on actual average speeds on roads, compiled using anonymous speed profiles covering more than 10 billion kilometres of driven roads gathered by millions of TomTom users. Factors such as traffic lights, roundabouts and speed bumps are taken into account to more accurately predict a journey time.
The massive range of features, adaptability and usability of the 930T makes it the most desirable in-car GPS device on the market. The new features of the TomTom's 930T offer added convenience and make it the best device released from TomTom for cars, trucks etc. The technology has moved on dramatically and it includes some innovative new concepts. These new innovations however are still embryonic and need to mature somewhat before they will be truly useful in daily use. The Map Share concept is great for making some minor modifications to the maps but really the quality of the core maps and the verification of these modifications need to significantly improve both in delivery time and accuracy. The user interface is still one of the easiest to use, allowing the viewing of all important information with a minimum of interaction. Bottom line - although not cheap, it's a great choice.
