Garmin nuvi 765T
Garmin Nuvi 765T is one of the newer widescreen units in the Nuvi GPS line, offering several improvements over the Nuvi 760. We believe that the text to speech and widescreen GPS units are worth paying the additional money for, and the Nuvi 765T has them both.

Marking the Garmin's leap onto the ‘lane guidance' bandwagon is a great feature. Meaning, the corner graphic showing your next turning already illustrates quite clearly which lanes you should be in on a multi-lane carriageway. But Garmin has also added a full-screen lane graphic to show more clearly where your car should be positioned on the road. The 765 also shows 3D building graphics, using City Navigator's Europe NT 2009 3D database. However, it doesn't include enough landmarks to be useful. As this is the T version, it also includes built-in traffic updates via TMC-RDS, with a lifetime subscription. This information is helpfully displayed by colouring nearby jammed roads red, so you can easily avoid them, with a small icon showing expected traffic delay on your current route.

Garmin's 765T is extremely easy to use. Garmin has created a simple but effective view where roads and routes are clearly distinguished. Onscreen clutter is kept to a minimum, with messages popping up only when needed. By default, at the top is your next manoeuvre, at the bottom on the left is your current speed and on the right the estimated arrival time. Clicking on the top displays a turn-by-turn list and clicking on the speed icon gives you a complete trip readout. This tells you useful details like average speed, maximum speed, average moving speed, and how long you spent stationary in traffic jams. The right-hand readout can be switched to distance to destination, estimated time to destination, direction of travel and elevation. So there’s plenty of information readily accessible, but the overall map view is clean. Menus are also intuitively laid out and easy for the novice to comprehend.

The 765T comes with a speed camera database pre-installed. As with the rest of the interface, alerts pop-up rather aesthetically, with a bar showing whether it’s a fixed, mobile, or average speed camera, plus a symbol to the right showing what the current speed limit should be. However, we found the alerts rather overzealous, warning of mobile cameras even on routes where we have never seen one in many years of driving.

The stand design is also very well thought out. With most sat-navs you need to pop them on the stand, then plug in power and traffic modules separately. But Garmin has created a system whereby these both plug into the stand, with contacts routed to the device. So all you need to do is slot the 765T in place and it’s ready to go. There’s still a standard mini-USB plug available for connecting to a computer, although no management software is included in the box.

You can pair the 765 with a mobile phone via Bluetooth and then use it as a hands-free device. Microphones are situated either side of the screen, so you can pick up calls and use the Garmin as a speakerphone. It’s also possible to dial calls via the touchscreen. The 765 includes a FM transmitter, so you can route audio output through your car stereo. Setting this up takes just a few finger touches. This can also work in tandem with the Garmin’s ability to play MP3s and audio books in Audible format. A standard stereo 3.5mm jack is available for headphones, too, should you want to use your Garmin as an expensive iPod replacement.

And there is more... A world clock displaying three time zones; a unit converter for area, currency, distance, speed and temperature; a calculator; and a foreign language dictionary. You can switch the device between car, bicycle and pedestrian routing. It’s possible to include Off Road options, rather than just the fastest or shortest.

The Garmin nüvi 765T is a thoughtfully designed sat-nav and offers all the essential features. The menu and map interface designs are also extremely easy to get to grips with, making it a great choice.
