Garmin nuvi 270
The Garmin nuvi 270 is a bit special because it's the transatlantic version of Garmin's new entry nuvi lineup. Equipped with a 3.5" screen, the nuvi 270 includes pre-loaded maps of the U.S., Canada and Europe. The other devices in the 200 line have less extensive coverage; the nuvi 200 has maps of all 49 continental United States, while the nuvi 250 offers all 50 states and Canada.
Garmin Nuvi 270 is at the upper end of the 200 series from Garmin. These lower cost Nuvi devices all come with a standard 3.5? touch screen display and a slim form factor. Like other Nuvis, the 270 comes with many of Garmin’s typical extras such as a clock, time zone viewer, unit converter, and is compatible with Garmin Travel Guides and SaversGuide products.
Garmin Nuvi 270 features a sleek, ultra slim design with automatic routing capabilities. With an easy to use touchscreen display, nuvi can route to addresses, restaurants, hotels and more with turn by turn directions and voice guidance. The nuvi 270, nuvi 250 and nuvi 200 GPS navigators offer all of the functions of a premium in dash system at a fraction of the cost. The nuvi 270 comes preloaded with highly detailed City Navigator NT road maps for North America and Europe. The nuvi 250 offers full coverage mapping for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. For additional cost savings, nuvi 200 is available with coverage of the lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Garmin is able to provide the nuvi 200 at a jaw dropping price by reducing the amount of preloaded mapping. The preloaded map data features nearly six million points of interest, including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, and attractions. The map data is provided by NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium quality mapping.
But don’t forget that this is an entry level GPS device. Some of the more advanced functions won’t be found on the Nuvi 270 in order to keep the costs low. There is no Bluetooth hands-free calling, no multiple destination routing, no music player, no live traffic reporting. Still, most of those features are not needed for every day travel, so this device can provide a great feature match at a lower price.
The one feature missing you might want to consider is text-to-speech. If you really want text-to-speech you will need to upgrade to the 350 which does not have European maps. To get text-to-speech and the European maps, look to either the 370 (you also get Bluetooth and a traffic receiver) or the 670 where you will also get a widescreen, traffic receiver, Bluetooth, and an FM transmitter. If you don’t need European maps, consider either the Nuvi 250 which has North American maps installed, or the 200 which has maps of just the 48 contiguous US states plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
The nüvi 270 is built with a high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver for extreme accuracy, as well as an SD card slot for storing your media and additional navigation tools, and a USB interface for loading data. All this is wrapped up in a package that measures 3.8 x 2.8 x .8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs just 5.2 ounces. The nüvi 270's 3.5-inch (diagonal) display is touchscreen-enabled, making it a cinch to control the device with your fingertips. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to five hours of battery life depending on use.
nüvi 270 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. In addition, nüvi 270 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs.
Navigation is just the beginning. nüvi 270 features many travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map. Optional plug-in SD cards for our line of Garmin Travel Guides and Garmin SaversGuide provide detailed data for attractions and information on nearby merchants offering discounts, so you can customize nüvi for your travel needs.
Actually the biggest deal about the Nuvi 270 is the pre-installed maps. Not only do you get North American maps, but the European maps are also installed and unlocked on the device. If you are a frequent traveler to Europe and are looking for a simple GPS device, this could be a perfect match.
