Magellan RoadMate 1400
The Magellan RoadMate 1400 full vehicle navigation system is easy to operate and affordable. The 1400 is another great automotive GPS receiver from the successful RoadMate line of units. It features a 4.3-inch WQVGA, full colour, anti-glare, touch-screen display with wide-screen imaging and an ultra-thin form factor. The RoadMate 1400 is equipped with Navteq on Board (mapping system which retails with a pre-loaded map on included SD card of the continental United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) and an intuitive interface for safe driver usage. The receiver also hosts 1.3 million searchable Points of Interest with their respective telephone numbers and addresses (POIs include spots such as coffee shops, airports, gas stations, ATMs, hotels, etc.).

There are several things that differentiate the RoadMate 1400 and make it such a great tool:
It calls out if the destination is on the left or right
Magellan’s QuickSpell feature simplifies input by graying out invalid characters when spelling out an address
As you near a turn a chime sounds as a final reminder to turn, which is very helpful

The RoadMate 1400 presents you with route options each time you choose a destination. On one hand, it gives you a bit more control over preferred routes. Then again, it’s another tap every time you want to route to a destination.

The exit POI feature, designed to give you quick access to key POIs at upcoming freeway exits, is very useful. The only problem is that it doesn’t list the exit number or highway name/number, it only shows the miles to the exit. To use exit POIs (available from page two of the main menu), simply tap a POI icon on the screen shown below. This feature can only be used on limited access highways.

The large wide-format color touch screen shows your position on the map, route, destination, ETA, surrounding Points of Interest, signal strength, next maneuver, street names and more at a glance. Turn-by-turn voice guidance saves time getting directions before leaving the house and enables you to keep your eyes on the road. Bold, intuitive menu options make it easy to pick destinations and choose how you navigate, without even reading the instructions. Uniquely stylish and compact, it's easy to transfer your Magellan GPS between vehicles or toss it in a suitcase to take anywhere. Easily find what you need - gas stations, restaurants, hotels, ATMs and hundreds of other businesses and services are intuitively categorized and searchable from the built-in POI database.

Select the types of services and amenities you'd like to see and interactive icons appear on the map. Touch an icon for a nearby service to see address, phone number (when available) and get an instant route. The convenient "tow-truck icon" shows detailed information about your current location with a single touch so you can provide clear direction to roadside assistance. Program any location into the "Home" button and find your way back from wherever you are.

More favorable features:
Includes text-to-speech to call out street names for upcoming turns
Calls out that the destination is on the right or left
The unit comes on automatically upon starting your car
QuickSpell feature speeds data entry
Allows for zip code entry in addition to spelling out city
Address entry screens allow you to choose previous cities
Can access volume control from map screen
Exit POIs is a useful feature
You can select categories of POIs to show on the screen, and you can tap them to route to them
Includes a backup and restore function
It is easy to both secure the unit into and release it from the mount
You can customize automatic detour options that will kick in when you are sitting still in traffic (see image below)

The RoadMate 1400 doesn't have the Bluetooth, AAA TourData, or Voice Recognition found on the higher-end Magellan Maestro models, but it does have a strong set of core navigation capabilities aimed at the driver more concerned with ease of use than bells and whistles. The 1400 offers budget-conscious consumers basic, fully functional auto navigation at a low price point. Its stylish, wide-screen design includes an intuitive, new user interface that guides drivers to their destination via voice and on-screen prompts. This is definitely a highly recommended device.
