It features a 3.5-inch QVGA, full colour, anti-glare, touch-screen display, text-to-speech ability, an intuitive interface for safe usage during driving and a small, pocket-sized form design. The RoadMate 1212 comes equipped with Magellan's QuickSpell system (which checks and searches spelling of addresses) and the SmartDetour feature for re-configuring routes to compensate for heavy or stopped traffic.

The Magellan RoadMate 1212 has maps of North America including Canada and Puerto Rico. The gadget also comes loaded with preinstalled points of interest for these areas using the software, Navteq On Board. The LCD touch screen is in color with a resolution of 320 x 240 and its diagonal size is 3.5 inches. The spoken instructions also announces street names as well as the instructions. This means that the user is told not just to turn left but to turn left on which named street. This is especially helpful if traffic is busy and the driver would rather hear the instructions than look at the screen.
The 1212 has good battery life, fast address entry, highly readable screen/display, clear voice, reasonably good directions for the most part. The address entry is screamingly fast compared to the other similar GPS units. It's very fast. It fires up before you put it on the charger. Program it first with the name of your home’s town and it will fill in the rest of the town name/state. As soon as you put in the first two letters of the street, it gives you a choice of the four streets that start that way; no waiting required.
On the whole, the Magellan Roadmate 1212 is great value for money.
