Magellan Triton 2000
The Magellan Triton 2000 is a sat-nav device designed for use outdoors and is suited to activities such as hiking, skiing and water sports. The device feels reassuringly rugged and fits in the hand well. Encased in a rubber and hard plastic shell, it's designed to withstand water submersion.

On the front of the device is a 2.7-inch colour touchscreen display, which makes the map interface and menu navigation easy. A small and fiddly stylus is provided, although using a ?nger or the sturdy buttons below may be preferable.

Magellan's Triton 2000 is the upper-echelon model in its new handheld GPS device series, and the 2000 really does have everything you could possibly want in a GPS device that still fits comfortably into your pocket.

For starters, there's the 2-7/10-inch color screen that gives you an ample view of the interface, maps, and compass feature that are a part of all the devices in the line. The 2000 also features a built-in barometer that keeps you on top of any weather changes if you're out on the trail for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, the touchscreen display makes it easy to move from one menu to another instead of having to just use a keypad.

There is also an integrated microphone and speaker for recording messages that can then be associated with waypoints on your map. The speaker allows this GPS device to be used as an MP3 player, so you won't need to haul your iPod out on the trail as well.

Magellan also incorporated a 2-megapixel digital camera into this GPS device. It's not going to take the place of a high-end digital camera but if you want to get some quick and easy nature shots to show your friends what to find at the trail's end, it's an interesting convergence option. The 2000 even has an LED flashlight built in to help you find your way home in the dark.

The entire device is waterproof and water submersible, so even if you drop it into a stream, it should continue to work fine. There's an SD card slot for uploading more maps and MP3 files, so you can expand on the North American basemap that comes preloaded on the device.

Features:
2.7-inch full colour QVGA display
Pre-loaded basemap of Europe
Touch screen
Directional pointer and compass
Highly intuitive user interface
3-axis electronic compass
Built-in barometer
2-megapixel digital camera
Built-in power flashlight
Voice recorder
Digital music player
WAAS/EGNOS-enabled
SiRFstarIII GPS antenna with 3-5 metre accuracy
Extremely rugged and waterproof to IPX-7 standards
2 AA batteries (not included) provides 10 hours of use
Weighs 227 grams with batteries
USB 1.1 for transferring data

This GPS device weighs eight ounces, so it will not go unnoticed in your pocket, but it's still fairly easy to port around. It's powered by two AA batteries that provide an average of 10 hours of battery life--just using the GPS receiver--so you'll want to bring along some spares.

The Magellan Triton 2000 is an excellent GPS device for its purposes. There are good reasons to have all of these options in a handheld GPS device and they all function quite well. If you've got to have the best of the best in terms of a handheld device, the Magellan Triton 2000 has it all.
