Iridium mobile phones function as both cellular and satellite phones
providing service in areas where many cellular and landlines may
never go. This allows you to stay in touch from virtually anywhere
with reliable voice and data services.
The Iridium Satellite System is the only provider of truly global, truly
mobile satellite voice and data solutions with complete coverage of
the Earth (including oceans, airways and Polar regions). Through a
constellation of 66 low-earth orbiting (LEO) satellites operated by
Boeing, Iridium delivers essential communications services to and
from remote areas where terrestrial communications are not available.
The service is ideally suited for industrial applications such as heavy
construction, defense/military, emergency services, maritime, mining,
forestry, oil and gas and aviation. Iridium currently provides services
to the United States Department of Defense and launched commercial
service in March 2001.
The IRIDIUM system is a satellite-based Personal Communication
Services (PCS), or Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) system, supporting
global, wireless digital communications. IRIDIUM provides voice,
messaging and data services to mobile subscribers using handheld
user terminals.
Unlike the geosynchronous satellites, which hover about the equator
at an altitude of 35, 900kilometers ( 22,300 miles), the Iridium
constellation of 66 satellites are in polar orbitalorbital an altitude of
only 780 kilometers (485 miles). The LEO orbital configuration provides
the following benefits over systems based on other orbital
configurations: no significant transmission delays, small, handheld
pagers and phones, (versus laptop-size terminals), lower transmit
power resulting in longer battery life and complete global coverage.
This includes all oceans and all land areas including the Poles.
The Iridium system is predicated upon line-of-sight access to the
satellite. In-building coverage for handsets is generally not available.
The Iridium pager provides a better means of receiving messages in
urban locations and can be used inside buildings. Callers who are
unable to reach the subscriber on an Iridium handset for any reason
will have the option of leaving a message. The message will be
delivered the next time the handset has line-of-site access to the
satellite constellation.
Iridium services allow customers to communicate virtually anywhere
in the world, by offering a World Satellite (Telephony), World Paging
and World Data Services. Iridium's Terrestrial Wireless Switches allow
the gateways to connect the constellation with the public switched
networks. This allows anyone with an Iridium phone to communicate
with any land based or cellular phone in the world. The Iridium phone
through the Iridium network give callers one phone number to make
and receive calls from anywhere in the world to virtually everywhere.
