For many long years, your car radio was the main entertainment device.
From the good old cassettes to the newer CDs, you and your family could
spend the long driving hours listening to your favorite programs. Then,
the next pleasant and useful technologic addition was the GPS. You could
get from one point to another with great precision, still listening to the
radio.

The next technological surprise arrived in the form of satellite radio. No
more interferences and no more receiving problems. You were able to
listen to high quality broadcasts and to your favorite station, no matter
where you were or how long you had to drive.

And now, the new amazing thing arrived - car satellite TV. Just when you
thought that your new satellite radio is the ultimate car entertainment
device, surprise! Why listen to radio when you can watch TV? Well, not
you the driver, but your passengers. And in most cases, the back
drivers are the kids. Obviously, kids are the most enthusiastic targets
for high quality programs, whether on the way to school or durring
vacation traveling.

In-car satellite TV has become increasingly popular in recent years, as
more families discover its benefits in keeping passengers entertained
while traveling. As anyone with kids can attest, these entertainment
devices can be a godsend on long trips or even during everyday use.
A typical installed system lets rear-seat passengers watch programs on
one or more LCD screens, play video games, plug in a portable music
player, or listen to a separate audio source through the car’s audio
system.

More and more U.S. motorists now consider their vehicle as an extension
of their living room, and just like at their home, are demanding live
entertainment and information over satellite TV. The trend derives from
the phenomenal growth of in-vehicle entertainment systems. Today more
than 61 percent of full-size SUVs and 53 percent of luxury SUVs and
minivans models have in-vehicle video screens.

Clear, digital quality satellite signals are available at all times in all traffic
conditions, no matter how congested the road might get. With hundreds
of channels of constant entertainment to suit all ages and all tastes, a
car satellite TV is an invention long overdue for many parents and family
members. In fact, the basic technology has been available for years in
the form of marine satellites or on other big modes of transportation.
However, once the sizes of the satellite equipment have gotten smaller
and more sophysticated, it became considerably more accessible.

The satellite systems usually strap onto the roof of the vehicle and
utilize an antenna to gather the signal from the satellite. The devices
vary in weight with some weighing almost 45 pounds and others
weighing very little, so the addition of weight on the average vehicle is
not necessarily noticeable depending on the owner’s preference. As
technology grows, the size of the satellite and antenna apparatus
grows smaller.

Other cable companies are now starting to partner with the car satellite
TV system distributors to add packages and cost reductions to the
consumer. This allows the selection of a broader group of channels as
well as greater picture quality and greater reception. Rooftop antennas
can cost upwards of 2000 dollars at the moment and coupled with the
cost of the cable packages and other maintenance is still not the most
affordable entertainment option, however with parents losing patience
over hours of Barney songs, the cost may soon not be much of a factor.

So next time you pack your things for the next family vacation, don't
forget the TV guide!
