Satellite HDTV means that you're watching TV programs in high definition
and that you receive the broadcast through one of the satellite TV
providers. It also means that you are among the lucky owners of a HD
television set, but that's a different story.
HD is today's cutting edge tv technology. The digitized programming
creates a totally new experience. High definition TV programs via satellite
delivers imagery and sound that are similar to what you hear and see in
real life. Simple as that.
The most noticeable difference between hd television and analog tv is
picture quality and size. The dramatically increased resolution and aspect
ratio (screen width versus height) produce a razor sharp picture with a
significantly wider viewing area. The excellent quality of the picture is in
fact the best resolution you can get. The higher number of resolution
lines on your screen produces a sharper, more accurate picture. If the
standard analog television produces 330 lines of resolution, and the
much crisper dvd format provides 400-480 lines of resolution, the
DirecTv satellite hdtv receivers deliver up to 1080 lines of resolution!
So no wonder that by delivering over 1 million pixels on screen, the
satellite's digitized tv programmes create crystal clear images with the
most minute details. Plus, the larger aspect ratio allows you to see action
on screen that is normally cropped-off with analog broadcasts. The
aspect ratio of hdtv at 16:9 is more in line with the human visual field
versus the 4:3 ratio of standard analog television.
Satellite hd broadcasts deliver an amazing viewing experience that
allows you to see movies just as they were filmed. Combined with the
Dolby Digital sound, hd programming via satellite makes you feel as
though you are in the midst of the action on screen.
There are three modes of HDTV transmissions: terrestrial, satellite, and
cable. Terrestrial HDTV is available "over-the-air" and can be received
through an antenna in or on your home, if you have a TV with a digital
tuner. There is a limited amount of terrestrial HDTV content available in
the U.S. today. The majority of HDTV users watch HDTV via satellite or
cable. Satellite HDTV is broadcast by bouncing a signal off a satellite in
space. The signal is then received by a satellite dish connected to your
home. Cable HDTV is transmitted through a digital set-top box and
optimally connected to your television via a component, DVI-D or HDMI
cable. In all these cases, you need an HD - capable television with an
internal or external HD tuner, to receive and view the HD signal.
Satellite HD programs can be received simply by subscribing to one of the
two suppliers - DirecTV and Dish Network. You'll need of course the
proper receiver and a HD TV set from manufacturers like Hitachi,
Mitsubishi, Panasonic, ProScan, RCA, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and
Zenith. In order to enjoy HDTV, however, you must have a television
that can receive an HDTV signal. A television that can support HDTV
needs to have a resolution that is high enough to support the HD signal
(1024 X 768 or higher).
Many ABC, NBC and CBS affiliate stations across the country have
already begun boadcasting in the hd format. In addition, DirecTv and
Dish Network offer a growing lineup of high definition telecasts via
satellite. Programming packages feature live sporting events like NHL
hockey and Major League Baseball, as well as movies, concerts and
more. You can also experience the wonders of nature and space
exploration displayed so vividly on Discovery HD Theater™. Enjoy
magnificent presentations of wildlife and planetlife that looks so real -
you will want to reach out to touch it! Closeups reveal, with incredible
detail, features never before seen with conventional television.
For sports enthusiasts, ESPN HD captures the action up-close for virtually
every sporting event. Additionally, HBO and Showtime offer hd broadcasts
of championship boxing, big hit movies, award winning series and
Hollywood favorites around the clock. You can also enjoy high definition
programming on select BlockBuster pay-per-view movie channels.
HD programming is broadcast in a higher resolution than SDTV or
Standard Definition TV (which can still be digital). Additionally, HDTV’s
usually have significantly higher native resolution than other TVs, so
overall, HDTV can provide a significant improvement in resolution over
SDTV. Terms like 480p, 720p, and 1080i refer to the resolutions of TV
broadcasts, and more lines of resolution mean a higher quality image.
Standard Definition programming is generally broadcast in 480i or 480p,
which means that the picture has 480 vertical lines of resolution that are
either "progressive" (p) or "interlaced" (i). HDTV is generally broadcast
in either 720p or 1080i. Interlaced scan indicates that every second line
of resolution is shown for a fraction of a second, alternating back and
forth with every other line. Typically this cannot be seen by the human
eye, but occasionally, on fast action videos like sports, you can detect
minor picture defects or flickers.
Progressive scanning allows every line to be shown at once, so the
picture is sharp and clear as possible. Because of this, some people claim
that 720p is preferable to 1080i. On the other hand, however, 1080i has
more lines of resolution, so at close distances the picture quality may be
perceived to be better than that of 720p broadcasts.
Taking into consideration the fact that many people are switching to
satellite broadcast, it is no surprise that HD Satellite TV is now the option
of choice. Today it became easier than ever to get a whole host of great
channels using HD Satellite TV and enjoy every minute of it. HD Satellite
TV works in conjunction with the existing satellite service that you have
to make the overall picture quality all that much better. After all, what
could be better than seeing all the programs that you love in crystal
clear format?
