DIRECTV launched its satellite TV services in 1994. According to various
studies, the DIRECTV system was one of the fastest selling consumer
electronics product ever to enter the market, faster than color TVs, CD
players and VCRs.
As a leading satellite TV provider, DIRECTV delivers the freedom and
choice we’ve all been looking for. Moreover, the company offers a vast
range of HD programs. Since all its programs are all-digital programming,
you can enjoy local and premium channels to the full extent. With
DIRECTV you get the whole package that includes amazing programming
content, customer service and clear technology.
The DIRECTV system comprises several components. It includes a small
satellite dish - an antenna for receiving the satellite broadcast; a digital
integrated receiver/decoder (IRD), which separates each channel,
decompresses and translates the digital signal so that your TV set can
display it; and a remote control.
DIRECTV system receives its signals from six high-power satellites: four
built by Hughes Electronics Corp. (DBS-1, DBS-2, DIRECTV 1-R, and D4-S),
and two built by LORAL (DIRECTV 5, 6). Each satellite has multiple
transponders that relay the DIRECTV signal from the broadcast centers
to home satellite dishes. The D4-S satellite is a "spot beam" satellite
which allows signals to target specific areas within the U.S., and is used
by DIRECTV to deliver local programming. The "spot beam" satellite has
five antennas and multiple feeds. Each feed projects its particular signal
onto a special location on one of the antennas. The antenna is
specifically shaped to bounce the signal to a specific location in the
continental U.S.
DIRECTV's satellites were placed in geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles
above the earth. On earth DIRECTV provides its services from three
orbital locations.
Once the DIRECTV satellite TV system is installed and the dish is directed
towards the orbiting satellites, no adjustment is necessary to change
programming because the satellites remain in the same location. The
dish doesn't have to follow the satellites, so there's no need to wait for
the picture to show.
To gather programming content, ensure its digital quality, and transmit
the signal up to the satellites, DIRECTV created two of the most
sophisticated digital broadcast centers in the world. The DIRECTV
systems are located in Castle Rock, Colorado, and Los Angeles,
California. Programming comes to the broadcast center from content
providers (CNN, ESPN, etc.) via satellite, fiber optic cable and/or special
digital tape. Most satellite-delivered programming is immediately
digitized, encrypted and uplinked to the orbiting satellites.
The DIRECTV system retransmits the signals to each customer's dish.
Before any recorded programs are viewed by the customers,
technicians use sophisticated post-production equipment to view
and analyze each program, ensuring audio and video quality.
Professional video layout servers have playback of a program triggered
by a computerized signal sent from the broadcast automation system.
Back-up video playout servers ensure uninterrupted transmission at
all times.
The DIRECTV system's installation is easy and fast. The dealers'
nationwide network of certified local installers are prompt, courteous
and will bring everything needed to start your DIRECTV service.
DIRECTV system's standard installation includes:
-Mounting of your satellite dish on an outside wall with the necessary
hardware, within 125 ft. cable length of your TV. Plus, the hardware
necessary to mount and ground your satellite antenna.
-Up to 125 ft. of RG-6 cable for standard receivers; up to 125 ft. of dual
RG-6 cable for advanced product installations.
-Routing of all cables to one TV per receiver installation either through
an exterior wall (frame or one layer of masonry) or from your basement
and connection to an existing phone jack within 25 ft. (connection to a
phone line is required for DIRECTV System activation; if multi-receiver
installation, all receivers must be hooked to the same phone line).
- Connection to your TV, VCR and DVD player, if co-located, and
activation of DIRECTV programming.
-Once your DIRECTV System is installed, the professional installer will
demonstrate how to use the DIRECTV System, including programming
your remote and any services associated with DIRECTV. Installation of
more then 4 receivers and custom installation available for a charge.
