Worldspace is the world's only global media and entertainment
company positioned to offer a satellite radio experience to consumers
in more than 130 countries. Worldspace delivers the latest tunes,
trends and information from around the world and around the corner.
Worldspace subscribers benefit from a unique combination of local
programming, original Worldspace content and content from leading
brands around the globe including the BBC, CNN, Virgin Radio, NDTV
and RFI. Worldspace satellites cover two-thirds of the globe with six
beams.
Each beam is capable of delivering up to 80 channels of high quality
digital audio and multimedia programming directly to Worldspace
Satellite Radios anytime and virtually anywhere in its coverage area.
Worldspace is a pioneer of satellite-based digital radio services
(DARS) and was instrumental in the development of the technology
infrastructure used today by XM Satellite Radio.
WorldSpace is the only satellite radio service outside of the USA.
Through its subscription-based service, WorldSpace broadcasts
news, sports, music and educational programming to satellite radios
throughout a global area that includes more than four billion people.
WorldSpace is also credited with creating the evolution of satellite
radio. WorldSpace was the first to create and broadcast programming
via company owned and launched satellites AfriStar™ and AsiaStar™
to deliver 100% digital audio and exclusive WorldSpace created
programming to satellite radio receivers throughout Asia, Europe, the
Middle East and Africa. WorldSpace was also one of the principal
founding shareholders of XM Satellite Radio in the U.S. and is
responsible for some proprietary technology and original
programming and format structure, which is currently used to
broadcast to over 6.5 million subscribers across the U.S. The
Worldspace Global Content and Programming department provides
approximately 10% of the original content music programming
heard in America on XM Satellite Radio.
In the past 12 years the company has built three satellites and
launched two. The Worldspace audio, data, and multimedia services
provide unprecedented program choice and crystal clear reception
and are available to the end client through a variety of audio and
multimedia receivers and personal computer adapters. Powerful
L-band satellites with traveling wave tube amplifiers and onboard
base-band processors link with receivers that are equipped with
micro-integrated circuits capable of processing the satellites’
high-quality audio and data transmissions. Each satellite has three
beams with each beam capable of delivering 40+ channels of crystal
clear audio programming. Broadcasters and organizations uplink their
content through a centralized hub site or an individual feeder link
station. The satellite transmits the signal received from the
respective uplink stations in all or any combination of the
three-downlink beams of each satellite. WorldSpace developed the
new technologies, which are the heart of the direct-to-person
satellite service in cooperation with global industry leaders, including
Alcatel Space, Fraunhofer Institut Integrierte Schaltungen, Micronas
Intermetall, and STMicroelectronics.
